Thinking About Mini-Sites
by Michael
I’ve been thinking recently that I’d like to reorganise the way this blog works so that the categories I currently use are more distinct. At the moment it’s possible to subscribe to RSS feeds for the individual categories (just add ‘/feed/’ to the end of a category URL). However, the categories are only really useful at the moment for the archives and I’ve thought instead about making them more like mini-sites. As it stands the blog ranges over a pretty broad range of topics, some of which I’m sure aren’t of interest to people. Sometimes there are things I want to write about (particularly with regard to technology-related things) that I don’t feel 100% comfortable subjecting everyone to.
Having said that, I wonder sometimes if I really need a mini-site for every category. There are some things I want to write more about but when I get down to it they all seem to come back to technology. If that’s the case perhaps a mini-site based on categories isn’t the way to go. Rather, I should just create a blog for technology posts (perhaps similar to the way that the Crap Comics site works at the moment). But then that might create pressure to write in it a lot and I’m not sure if that’s a good idea or not.
There’s still a few more days left in Golden Week and I’ll try to come to a resolution before Sunday. Expect to see some changes then in the next few days. What exactly those will be I’m not quite sure.

The links to the weblog on the front page of the site are borked.
They contain non-exsitent links to pages such as “http://www.inqk.net/weblog/2007/05/03/” which ostensibly is supposed to point to this entry, for instance.
Not quite the changes you envisaged, I’m sure
They do? Which links are you referring to? I can’t find the borked links of which you speak.
Oh by the way you don’t really need “mini-sites”. You just need a way to group categories of entries, like the way other weblogging software does.
For instance, I read a weblog called Watashi to Toyko by a Japanese girl (it’s quite entertaining by the way). Judging by the favicon, it’s run by Typepad and the “Categories” appear to be a good approximation of what you want.
Sorry; not the front page.
The Comics page used to link to recent weblog entries; it’s those links which are broken.
Oh, I see you already have Categories… you just need to display them better, probably.
Fixed.
Thanks
Yeah, that’s kind of what I’m thinking is a better alternative to creating a brand new site. But then I’m worried about if I increase in posting in one category it might drown out the others. Still, I suppose if I make it more prominent (perhaps with links near the top of the page or in the ‘Sections’ area) then people will just navigate to the area that interests them.
The tyranny of the blank page…
I don’t think you should worry too much about what you write about in your private weblog ;-P
Would you prefer to write about non-technology matters when there’s a whole heap of gadgets catching your attention? Of course not.
Suggestion – instead of messing with the Archives section, revamp “Recent Entries” to list every Category, and the titles of the latest (say) 3 entries in each. Maybe even move this list to “above the fold”, in the black area just below your latest 2 entries.
